This site is intended to be a resource for the massage community, therapists, students and educators especially, but possibly also advanced massage clients interested in getting a wide experience of modalities and an inside view of the massage world. While there are a number of sites offering a short paragraph description of many modalities, there isn't a place to get a more in-depth overview. I am extremely interested in the lineage of the techniques we use. Many techniques with different names are closely related because they share the same ancestor modalities. I am also interested in the cultures modalities have emerged from. This project is, in part, another effort to describe the Bodywork Tree. At a more practical level, it can be very difficult to make an informed decision about what continuing education to pursue. I am hoping that this site will fill a void for therapists to select new modalities to learn based on the kind of work they prefer to do, and help them find instructors to learn from. Students in massage school will have a better starting point in the kinds of research projects often assigned. Ultimately, this site will house reviews of the associated workshops, dvds, books, and specialized supplies for each modality. The most indepth writing done so far has been on the following modalities: I'm organizing modalities in two major ways: by geographic origin and technique depth. The site will be publicized once at least basic articles are written for all the modalities currently listed in those pages. As you can see there's still quite a bit of work to do. If there are writers out there who might like to participate in this initial writing push, feel free to contact me: info at joancolemassage.com. If you are the developer of a modality I haven't included yet and want to write the section to be part of the site from the beginning, I'd love to have your contribution. |
