Indian head massage is a seated massage that is ideal for seekers of mental tranquility. Nothing is better if you are having trouble turning off the brain for a while. It is also helpful for headaches, eye strain, TMJ and neck pain.
Based on the ancient art of Indian Head Massage (Champi or Shiroabhyanga), this includes the massage of not just the head, but also the shoulders, upper arms, neck, scalp, and face.
Indian Head Massage originated in India, and after becoming very popular in England, is starting to become more well known in the U.S. Indian Head Massage relaxes the scalp and tones up the subcutaneous muscles relieving eyestrain, headaches and improving concentration.
Compared to American seated (chair) massage, there is less attention down the back, and much more focus on the scalp and face (typically time will be split fairly evenly between five areas: upper back/shoulders, upper arms, neck, scalp and face). An ordinary chair is used rather than the specialized kneeling massage chair with facerest.
Hair will be mussed in the process of this massage, so bring a comb or brush to repair your "do" afterwards. The 45 minute version of this massage can optionally include massaging ayurvedic oil onto the scalp.
